San Juan Hut Systems

The San Juan Hut System’s mission is to provide low-impact, human-powered, lightweight back-country sports adventure for the independent health-conscious traveler at a practical price.

We have devoted over twenty-five years to creating and defining destination hut to hut skiing and mountain bike travel. In 1983, while on a climbing/skiing trip in Canada, Joe Ryan and his buddy were inspired to develop their own hut system. Joe had used the Canadian ski huts for more than a decade. A comprehensive year-round hut system was needed in the US. That same year, Joe’s buddy was killed in an avalanche and their idea was put on hold.

A few years later, the idea was revived and put in motion. In 1987, San Juan Hut Systems was created on the north slope of the Sneffels Range in the Uncompahgre National Forest giving access to the remote Sneffells Wilderness and some of the best north aspect skiing in Colorado. Five huts were built connecting Telluride, Ridgway, and Ouray along the historic Dallas Trail system that traverses the range. Additionally, all the huts have their own trail head access. With these trails, you can ski hut-to-hut, or just reserve one hut to base from over several days as in the European and Canadian tradition.

Permit requirements at that time mandated that the huts be removed at the end of each ski season. No place to store the huts in the summer, and no source for income in the summer months kindled the birth of the first hut–to-hut mountain bike system. The first route, starting in Telluride, transitions through multiple climatic and geographic zones finishing in Moab, Utah. Fifteen years later saw the development of a second route traversing from Durango, Colorado to Moab, Utah.

Our winter hut system offers over 60 miles of cross country trails and access to phenomenal remote backcountry skiing. You are unlikely to cross another’s tracks. The San Juan Mountains present tremendous snow quality and first descent possibilities.

Our two 215 mile mountain bike routes provide a premium minimalist experience for the do it yourself adventurer. With the only destination hut-to-hut based system in the US, we take the weight out of bike touring by offering fully stocked huts and minimal route finding challenges.

Our most recent development is a system of hiking huts which provide hikers, hunters, and runners incredible access to remote terrain with light loads.

Ouray Ice Park Ouray Ice Park

Experience one of the Premier Ice Climbing venues in the World!

From mid-December through late-March Ouray is full of climbing activity and good cheer. Jim Donini, former president of the American Alpine Club, calls the Ouray Ice Park “the best venue in the world to develop ice-climbing skills,” and it’s easy to see why. A manmade ice climbing venue operated in a spectacular natural gorge. The Ice Park is home to more than 200 ice and mixed climbs, most within a 15-30 minute walk from downtown Ouray.

The Park is an engineering marvel, utilizing a gravity-fed plumbing system that routes more than 150,000 gallons of water a night to “farm” and maintain the famous blue ice. The Park and its infrastructure are jointly owned and managed by the nonprofit Ouray Ice Park, Inc. (OIPI), the City of Ouray, and a mix of other private and public landowners.

The Park is funded by your Membership! Learn more about the benefits of becoming a Member of the Ouray Ice Park on our website. Many of our Local Business Partners, who also support and help fund the Park, offer members a discount during the season.

In addition to the support of the community, and you, the climbers, each winter OIPI hosts the Ouray Ice Festival to celebrate the Park and raise funds for its operation. Despite the high cost of its maintenance, the Park remains free and open for public use.

If you enjoy quality horseback riding in a beautiful Colorado setting come see us. Great riding trails and views, well-conditioned horses, and experienced guides are the trademarks of Debs Livery.

Deb's Livery is fantastic for families, including "buddy seats" for children under seven.

Summer brings evening rides at 5:00 and 6:00 PM, allowing you to experience the cool air and alpenglow on the high peaks of the Cimarrons and San Juans.

Deb believes mountain riding is: "Picking your way through rocks, sagebrush and pinions. It is negotiating stream beds and charging up narrow ravines, and ducking tree limbs. The world looks different from atop an athletic mountain horse."

Box Canyon Falls Park Box Canyon Falls Park

The "Box Cañon" Falls, Ouray's own wonder of the world, is the culmination of Canyon Creek narrowing and spilling thousands of gallons a minute of water over the falls. It is truly a dramatic scene, and one that you can enjoy from both above and below the falls. The "Box Cañon" Box has been designated an important bird area by the National Audobon Society. At this most spectacular geological formation, the 85 foot waterfall plummets into a narrow, quartzite canyon with walls overhanging the falls by nearly 100 feet. Take Highway 550 south of Ouray and take a right on County Road 361. Signs point across the Uncompahgre Gorge to the Visitor's Center parking lot. The "Box Cañon" Visitor Center offers interpretive exhibits that describe the geology, wildlife and history of the area.

Box Cañon Falls has been the location of important research on the Black Swifts, which are protected under the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. Black Swifts (cypseloides niger) are the largest of the swifts that migrate to North America. The Black Swift colony typically arrives from Brazil at the Box Cañon Falls in early June and stays through September.

There are three interpretive trails in the park that range from easy to moderately difficult as well as numerous picnic sites.

  • The Falls Trail is a mostly level, easy, 500 foot walk into the canyon.
  • The High Bridge Trail takes you up 200 feet in a half mile round trip hike. Along the trail are beautiful views of town and the high peaks of the Amphitheater Cirque.
  • The Native Plant Loop is a short, easy stroll with river sounds, trees and shrubs, and plant markers to help identify local flora of the Box Cañon. This is the only trail within the park that does not have steps.

While the Visitor's Center closes in November, the trails in Box Cañon are open throughout the winter, conditions permitting.

Because of the popularity of the Box Cañon Falls as a nature viewing area dogs are not allowed within the park. Dogs are welcome on nearly all other trails in the Ouray area.
