Weehawken Creative Arts Centers Weehawken Creative Arts Centers

Weehawken Creative Arts is a 501c3 nonprofit organization with classrooms in Ouray and Ridgway.   Our mission "provide high quality arts education and personal growth programs within our community year-round."

Weehawken has three rented facilities where many programs take place:

  • Weehawken Ouray:  735 Main Street (next to Wildflower Boutique. Note: this is a classroom only.  Administrators are generally located in Ridgway.)
  • Weehawken Ridgway (and office):  1075 Sherman Street, Ste 201 (the old schoolhouse building)
  • Weehawken's Soulshine Artists Collective in Ridgway at 167 N. Cora Street (upstairs - shared artist studio space).
  • In addition, Weehawken offers workshops and classes in additional facilities and outdoors whenever necessary.
  • Weehawken's Office Hours are varied as the staff is split between multiple communities and organizations.  Best practice is to call us first to make sure we are in the office:  970.318.0150.
  • Weehawken Children's Garden in Ouray:  our children's garden is adjacent to a building commonly referred to by locals as "The Biota Building."  The address in google maps is:  14815 US 550, Ridgway, CO  81432.  It is just outside of town on your way towards Ridgway on your left, just before you hit Rotary Park, 2 minutes from the Ouray Visitor's Center.

For over a decade, Weehawken Creative Arts has been transforming the lives of children and adults in Ouray County and beyond through our dance program, art education offerings and beloved community events.   At our Arts Centers in Ouray and Ridgway, our extraordinary instructors offer high-quality classes and workshops for adults and kids year-round, in just about everything you can imagine – from fine arts and photography to creative writing to movement arts like fencing, karate and a full dance program.

Extensive historic pharmacy and medical collection dating back to 350 BC for your viewing with a special focus on Colorado and Wild West pharmacy related items.  Admission charge of $10.00 to that area of the store includes an extensive personal tour. It is best to call ahead to schedule a tour due to limited space per tour.  Tours are given at scheduled times during the summer season. 970-325-4003  The museum is behind the beautifully restored Aspen Drug fixture c.1888 and cannot be seen from the street even though the whole store has antiques and looks like a museum.  We are often the number one attraction in Ouray on trip advisor!

Our gift section in the front of the store has antiques, unique finds, jewelry, art, collectibles, oxygen, t-shirts, old fashioned candy and over the counter drug items including free pharmacist advice.

Our luxury short-term rental suite is available year-round.  It sleeps 2-3 with the best views in town.  Free Wi Fi, full kitchen, AC and two decks, grill, infloor heating, washer and dryer.  Rates range from $188 to 258/night and $1216 to 1706 per week depending on the season. Ouray County Historical Museum Ouray County Historical Museum

Visit the Ouray County Historical Museum ay 420 Sixth Avenue in Ouray and experience the incredible history of this intimate mountain community. The museum building was originally St. Joseph's Miners' Hospital, built in 1886 through contributions from mine owners and businessmen. In the building's early days the Sisters of Mercy operated the hospital with staff coming from Durango, Colorado and Omaha, Nebraska. It was a hospital until 1964. In 1971 the Ouray County Historical Society began exhibiting in the building and in 1976 purchased the building for a museum. There are three floors containing exhibits in twenty-nine rooms. Many additional displays are located in hall cases, alcoves and the original hospital dumb waiters. The Museum staff are continually updating and expanding the displays.

The Museum features a Research Center located at 722 Main Street in Ouray containing the Ross Moore Library of 7,000 books on Mining, geology and southwestern US History, 25,000 original historical documents and over 6,000 photos. The museum houses an impressive mineral collection, Ute Indian displays, mine exhibits, railroading and ranching exhibits, hospital operating rooms from the 1890s and the 1940s and a patient room just for starters. Also included are Victorian era displays, WWI and WWII military memorabilia from Ouray residents who served in those wars, historical exhibits of all kinds, photographs, and books! The museum is child-friendly with an activity finder book and exhibits for little visitors.


Special summer exhibits include the annual Quilt Show, The Dressing Room: Ouray Fashion Trhough 1945, and Ouray's Hot Springs, 90th Anniversary of the Hot Springs Pool in Photos and Text. In addition we have guided tours of Ouray's Main Street, the Cedar Hill Cemetery, and the Silverton Railroad grade on Red Mountain. See our web site calendar for details.

The mission of the Ouray County Historical Society (OCHS) is to preserve, protect, procure, exhibit and interpret whatever may relate to the natural, social and cultural history of Ouray County and the adjacent San Juan Mountain region of Colorado. Most of the collection spans the time period from 1875 through the World War II era. 

The Smithsonian Institution calls it one of the best little museums in the West! Arthur Frommer's Idiots Guide to the Rockies says: "If you visit one county museum in Colorado make it the Ouray Museum."
